Hui'an women's dress is often reduced to a colourful photograph. Its value is better understood as a changing social system: garments indicate place, age, occasion, labour and belonging.
The national listing protects knowledge of making and wearing as well as visible style. Contemporary wear, staged presentation and older everyday use should not be treated as identical contexts.

A museum or interpreted cultural programme can explain garment components before a coastal visit.
