Quanzhou String Puppetry

A marionette theatre in which performers coordinate many strings with music, voice and a large inherited repertory.

Multiple strings allow fine control of posture, limbs and specialised actions.

Start with the practice

Quanzhou string puppetry is a complete theatre system, not a novelty act. Manipulation technique, carved heads, costume, music, voice and repertory have developed together.

The national inventory records hundreds of traditional plays and a specialised musical system. UNESCO's Fujian puppetry programme separately recognises the region's method of training new practitioners.

What your eyes and ears should follow

  1. Watch the operator's hands during turns, kneeling, sleeve movement and object handling.
  2. The number of strings varies with the role and action; more strings are not automatically better without control.
  3. Carved faces and costume establish character before movement begins.

How to encounter it in Quanzhou

A theatre performance gives the clearest view. Sit where you can see both puppet and operator if the staging allows.

Workshops or demonstrations should be booked through official programmes rather than by arriving backstage.

Visit with respect

  • Never touch or lift a puppet by its strings.
  • Credit the troupe and production when sharing performance images.
