Start with the practice
This UNESCO entry is often mistaken for a separate puppet genre. It is a safeguarding programme involving the Quanzhou Puppetry Troupe and Jinjiang Hand Puppetry Troupe, created in response to breaks in transmission.
Its recognition belongs to UNESCO's Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. The focus is the method of teaching and sustaining a living art, not a claim that one performance style represents all Fujian puppetry.
What your eyes and ears should follow
- Training includes manipulation, repertoire, music and puppet construction rather than a single stage trick.
- String puppetry and glove puppetry use visibly different systems of control.
- Watch the performer as well as the puppet: hand position and timing reveal the accumulated technique.
How to encounter it in Quanzhou
Pair a public performance with a museum, backstage or workshop visit if an official programme offers one.
For a first visit, learn whether the event features Quanzhou string puppetry, Jinjiang glove puppetry or another form before booking.

- Do not handle puppets, strings or carved heads unless invited.
- Credit the troupe and practitioners when sharing workshop or rehearsal images.
